Guest Professors


Peter L. Althausen, MD (Reno, NV).  Dr. Althausen received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. While in medical school, he also received an MBA in healthcare administration from the same institution. His orthopaedic residency was completed at the University of California Davis Medical Center. After residency, Dr. Althausen completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been practicing at the Reno Orthopaedic Clinic since 2005. Dr. Althausen is subspecialty trained in trauma and focuses on both pediatric and adult fracture care. Special areas of interest include pelvis and acetabular fractures, periarticular fractures, and complex polytraumatic injuries. Dr. Althausen remains committed to teaching and research. He currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine where he teaches and mentors both medical and college students. Dr. Althausen presents annually at multiple national meetings and routinely teaches the latest techniques in fracture care to physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel. He has published a variety of scientific articles and textbook chapters concerning many aspects of orthopaedic trauma care. Dr. Althausen is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Althausen's orthopaedic specialty is in trauma.  

Richard Iorio, MD (New York, NY). Richard Iorio, MD, is the William and Susan Jaffe Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center Hospital for Joint Diseases and Chief of Adult Reconstruction at NYU Langone HJD. He co-founded Labrador Healthcare Consulting Services, Responsive Risk Solutions, and the Value Based Healthcare Consortium in 2015. He is a member of the Board of Directors for LIMA, the Lifetime Initiative for the Management of Arthritis.  Dr. Iorio is a national expert in physician and hospital quality and safety and a leader in the implementation of alternate payment paradigms in orthopaedic surgery. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Boston University School of Medicine.  He did his Orthopaedic Residency at Hahnemann University Medical Center and his Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.  He practiced at Lahey Clinic for 21 years, before coming to NYULMC HJD in 2012.  Dr. Iorio has published over 160 papers, 23 Book Chapters and participated in 25 funded grants.  He was awarded the Lahey Clinic Research Award in 2008, the AAHKS Clinical Research Award in 2013, the Otto Aufranc Award from the Hip Society in 2014, The Kilfoyle Award from NEOS in 2000 and 2015, the Stinchfield Award from the Hip Society in 2016 and several AAOS Research Awards.  He has been recognized locally and nationally for his clinical skills as a leading adult reconstruction surgeon in many media publications. He is a member of the Hip Society, The Knee Society, AAOS, and AAHKS.  He is the Research Committee Chairman for the Hip Society and the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee Chairman for AAHKS.

Edward G. McFarland, MD (Baltimore, MD). Dr. Edward G. McFarland is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is the Wayne H. Lewis Professor of Orthopaedics and Shoulder Surgery and serves as director of the Division of Shoulder Surgery. He specializes in the treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries. Dr. McFarland received his B.S. in biology at Murray State University and completed his M.D. at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He performed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, and completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group in Santa Monica, California. He joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins in 1992 as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and became a full professor in 2005. His areas of special interest include injuries to the shoulder and elbow (particularly those injuries associated with baseball and other sports), and related issues such as shoulder instability, shoulder rotator cuff problems and shoulder joint replacements. In addition to these, his research areas of interest include ligament healing, biomechanics of throwing and epidemiology of shoulder injuries. Dr. McFarland is a member of numerous professional organizations, serves on the editorial boards of three journals and is a past president of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He has authored or co-authored over 170 peer-reviewed articles, 20 book chapters and three full books, and has won several awards for his research and service.

Roger van Riet, MD (Antwerp, Belgium). Dr. Roger van Riet is an elbow surgeon, working in AZ Monica hospital, Antwerp (Belgium) and is currently the president of the Belgian Shoulder and Elbow Society. He is a Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Brussels. He is affiliated to the University Hospital Antwerp and is an active member of the Monica Orthopedic research Foundation (MoRe). Dr. van Riet has published over 30 book chapters on elbow surgery, over 70 peer reviewed papers and present regularly at national and international level. In 2001 Dr. van Riet completed a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. This resulted in a PhD on radial head morphology and biomechanics in 2004. Subsequently, he completed a clinical fellowship for upper extremity with Prof. Simon Bell and Dr. Warwick Wright at the Monash University in Melbourne (Australia); with Dr. Greg Bain at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide (Australia) and again at the Mayo Clinic with Dr. Bernard Morrey. Dr. van Riet is a very active elbow surgery clinician. In 2015, he performed nearly 900 elbow surgeries and had approximately 5000 patient visits in clinic.
